Discovery detects the hardware and software including computers, servers, printers, modems, IP enabled devices, and the applications installed on them. Discovery allows you to collect the information from the devices and share it with CMDB to analyze and monitor the asset's data.
Once you discover the assets from the different integration systems, onboard them via Resolution Intelligence interactive UI to schedule maintenance and prevent failures. Also, you can produce asset reports and analyze equipment performance to reduce unplanned downtime, optimize work and staff schedules.
Types of Discovery
Asset discovery consists of two types of discovery which are described as follows.
Horizontal Discovery
Horizontal discovery is a technique that Discovery uses to scan your network, find computers and devices, and then populate the Configuration Management Data Base (CMDB) with the Continuous Integrations (CIs) it finds.
Horizontal discovery creates direct relationships between CIs. Horizontal discovery is not aware of business services and does not create relationships between CIs.
Top-Down Discovery
Top-down discovery is a technique that client service mapping uses to find and map CIs which are part of business services, such as email service.
Discovering assets is a combination of both horizontal and top-down discovery in which horizontal discovery finds CIs and top-down discovery establishes relationship between the business services.
Enabling Asset Discovery
Enabling asset discovery allows you to find the devices on the networks which are connected to the Configuration Management Data Base (CMDB) integrations such as Azure, OpsRamp, and AWS.
To find the devices available on a network,
- Login to Resolution Intelligence.
- Navigate to Configurations --> Overview.
- From the Overview screen, point your cursor over Asset Discovery and click the link that appears in the small pop-up.
You will be redirected to Integrations screen where you can enable CMDB integrations such as AWS, Azure, and OpsRamp.
